A Brief History of Clarendon Hills

Like many communities in the western suburbs, Clarendon Hills owes its beginnings to the railroad. The Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad was built through the area in 1864, opening the rolling prairie to settlers who wanted an escape from crowded city life in Chicago.

In 1869, Chicago businessman Henry C. Middaugh joined a group of investors to purchase 270 acres just north of the tracks. Middaugh drained the land and planted miles of ash and elm trees, laying the foundation for the leafy streets residents still enjoy today. On November 4, 1873, the plat was officially recorded, and Robert C. Harris, a former president of the railroad, suggested the name “Clarendon Hills.”

Growth was gradual at first. The 1880 census counted just 14 families in the village. The Hinsdale Golf Club, located within Clarendon Hills, was chartered in 1898 and became an early social hub. In 1924, Clarendon Hills officially incorporated as a village, in part to avoid annexation by neighboring Hinsdale.

Middaugh’s Queen Anne style mansion stood near the train station for more than a century and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Although the home was demolished in the early 2000s, many of its artifacts were saved by the Clarendon Hills Historical Society, which preserves the village’s story at Heritage Hall, a restored 1930s water pump house.

Living and Working in Clarendon Hills

Known as “The Volunteer Village,” Clarendon Hills offers small-town charm with big-city access. The Metra BNSF Line stop in the heart of downtown provides an easy commute to Union Station, making the village a favorite for professionals who work in Chicago. Families are drawn to highly regarded schools in Community Consolidated School District 181, along with Hinsdale Central High School and private options such as St. John of the Cross.

The walkable downtown features independent shops, local restaurants, and seasonal events like the farmers market and holiday walk that bring neighbors together throughout the year. With beautiful homes, tree-lined streets, and a strong sense of community pride, Clarendon Hills is an exceptional place to put down roots and raise a family.
