Stop Gingivitis From Allowing You From Smiling

Don’t Let Gingivitis Stop You From Smiling

Imagine going in for a routine dental visit, only to find out you have gingivitis. If you have never heard of gingivitis, you will begin to wonder what exactly it is, whether it’s serious, or if there’s treatment.

We gathered all the information you may need to know about gingivitis so you are able to maintain your healthy smile!

Gingivitis

We define gingivitis as the inflammation of the gums characterized by irritated gums, redness, swelling, and in some cases, bleeding. These symptoms are typically mild and can be painless. In order to be diagnosed with gingivitis, regular trips to the dentist are important; especially since the symptoms can be subtle.

The first stage of periodontal, or gum disease, is gingivitis. This should be taken seriously. Gingivitis will turn into periodontal disease if left untreated. This can lead to recession and damage of the gums, as well as tooth and bone loss.

The Causes of Gingivitis

Typically, gingivitis is the result of poor oral hygiene. When plaque on the teeth isn’t removed from brushing and flossing, the bacteria riddled plaque will harden into what is called tartar. Plaque and tartar buildup in the gums causes irritation and inflammation, also known as gingivitis.

Other contributing factors to gingivitis development include certain medications or illnesses, genetic predisposition, hormonal changes, and smoking.

Can Gingivitis be Reversed?

Although finding out you have gingivitis can be troubling, there is good news: keeping a good oral hygiene routine and regular dental visits can, in many cases, get rid of gingivitis.

Good oral hygiene can both prevent and treat gingivitis. Professional cleanings, brushing and flossing daily, as well as regular use of antibacterial mouthwash can keep the bacteria that are found in plaque from hardening into tartar, preventing and treating gingivitis effectively.

Gingivitis is reversible. If you treat it early and follow instructions given to you by a dental care provider, gingivitis can be reversed!
